Quotes
"How absurd to be judged by others at all, especially by those who have never experienced a disability or who are unwillingly providing us with support or who don't listen to the voices we have."
Many people do not realize the long term effects that discrimination or bullying can have. Words can cut deep and leave scars. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and most times, they do not choose to have a characteristic or disability that sets them apart from the regular population, nor do they want their differences to be exemplified or point-out. It is a necessity that children grow up in households and schools that support being kind and loving to everyone, event hose who are different. The sooner that this acceptance is learned, the more-equipped the child is for interactions in the real world.

"I started to notice that I didn't like the classes I was taking called special education. I had to go through special ed. almost all my life. I wanted to take other classes that interested me. I had never felt so mad, I wanted to cry."
It is truly incredible that we can have the opportunity to see from the perspective of a special needs student. Personally, I believe that no student should be forced into a program that they do
not wish to be part of. Additionally, if a student feels that they can excel in another class, they should be allowed to take part in it. Granted, disabilities can make things more complicated at times, but that does not mean that they are incapable of performing at the level of other students.

"Community requires a willingness to see people as they are-different perhaps in their minds and in their bodies, but not different in their spirits or in their willingness to contribute to the mosaic of society. It requires the helper to have the humility to listen for what the person says he or she needs. Also, the helper must see that the interaction helps both ways."
Everyone is different and can contribute differently to the community they are in. According to Michelle Obama,"Success isn't about how much money you make; it's about the difference you make in people's lives." When being kind to others and providing assistance to those in need, please do not expect compensation in material goods or ego gains. The sense of greater purpose in life, and the feeling of happiness and well-being are the direct result from showing love to others.

Throughout elementary school, I was always buddied with a autistic boy named Alex. Since I was performing very well in school, the teacher had me assist in Alex's education and I am proud to say that he did as well if not better, than all the other students in our classroom.

  1. Great post! I agree with your explanations of the quotes you chose because all students deserve to take classes they want and feel they can succeed in. Everyone needs to work together and be supportive no matter what.

  2. I really enjoyed the quotes you chose and I think they represent the article perfectly. I also liked your interpretation and analysis of them. I also had a similar elementary school experience. I did not work as closely with the special education group like you did, but they were always in my classes and everyone would help them the best they could. Overall, great job!
